The Basics of Official Betting

A slew of betting options have made the game of football one of Nevada’s most popular wagering opportunities. With so many different bets available, it can be challenging to keep track of all the terms and rules. That’s why we created this handy guide to help you understand the basics of official betting.

Legal sports betting is booming across the United States, with nearly half of American adults now living in jurisdictions that have launched regulated sportsbooks. The industry has generated billions in wagers, bolstering the finances of professional leagues and generating revenue for states that allow it. But it’s important to be aware of the risks involved in making a sports wager.

The NFL and NHL are the only two major professional sports leagues that have stated a position on legal sports betting, with the latter opting for a wait-and-see approach due to concerns about potential player safety issues. In the meantime, the NHL has partnered with several bookmakers to promote its expansion Vegas Golden Knights team. The league also requires players to acknowledge gambling rules in their contracts.

NBA rules prohibit players and those working for the league from placing any bets on NBA games. The rule is enforceable whether players are inside their own team facilities or on the road with the club. Exceptions can be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Other NBA-related gambling activities that are not permitted include offering or accepting a bribe to fix a match or event within a match, as well as misusing inside information that could reasonably be used for betting purposes. Offering a gift to an umpire is considered a violation and will lead to a three-year ban from the league.
